Report Concern

Guide for ISKCON Leaders

When a child reports that they have experienced abusive behaviors, serious attention should be paid to the report. While not every child’s account may ultimately constitute a report of abuse, it is essential to determine the truth to prevent further harm. This ensures the protection and well-being of the child while also safeguarding against the consequences of false allegations. A thorough and impartial investigation is critical in addressing such situations with sensitivity and fairness.

The following initial steps should be taken if anyone has come to you with a concern of abuse:

  • Follow local laws concerning mandated reporting of suspected or confirmed abuse. These laws may entail that the first step after hearing about the abuse is to contact the government authorities and cooperate with them fully.
  • Remove the child from the situation of suspected abuse.
  • Remove suspected abuser from situation near children – ensure that suspected abuser does not have access to or interact with children.
  • Contact the local Child Protection Team or ISKCON’s Child Protection Oversight Committee.
  • Provide support to the victim: Offer emotional and spiritual support to the child and their family, while respecting their privacy and autonomy.
  • Ensure the child and their family have access to professional counseling or other support services as needed.
  • Make sure all information is relayed to the local CPT, GBC, RGB or CPOC.
  • Be sure not to do or say anything that may cause the child to feel responsible for being abused.

One should also remember that both the child and the parents of the child will be very scared. It is in everyone’s best interest to act with kindness and understanding in these situations.
